The Lady in Plaid

"The Lady in Plaid" is the second installment of The Liam Smith Show and first appeared on The Slightly Warped Website on September 26, 1999. The episode was written by Jason Donner.

Episode History

When "Revenge is Sweet" was written, it was only supposed to be a one-shot deal, but when Liam D. Smith wrote the second episode of Jay & Jason, Jason Donner replied with this episode.

The genesis of the episode was from Donner's love of parapsychology and from the fact that every female ghost seems to be described as a woman in a certain color… The Lady in Brown, the Lady in White, and The Lady in Pink for example. With only the idea of a Lady Ghost Wearing Plaid, Donner sat down to write this episode with no plan of action whatsoever.

Summary

Liam Smith is saddened and depressed by the loss of his pet, Fluffy the Hamster and cannot find solace anywhere. His sadness is brought to an abrupt end when he witnesses a ghost woman at the foot of his bed one night and is scared out of what little wits he has.

After a few more late night scares, Liam enlists the help of a medium who, instead of exorsising the ghost from Liam's apartment, accidentally summons Satan to the Earth Plane. All seems lost until Mister Hilter calls on the help of Minnesota Governor Jesse "The Body" Ventura who defeats Satan with a kick in the groin.

Later that night, Liam's ghost reappears with Fluffy the Hamster who uses his last goodbye to tell Liam what a horrible pet owner he was and how much he hates him. This last act of spite buys Fluffy a one way trip to Hell.

Notes

  • This episode introduces Harry the Handyman, a character directly inspired by the 80's slasher comedy, Student Bodies in which an actor named The Stick portrays a tall, lanky, double-jointed janitor named Malvert. The Stick later appeared on an old Nickelodeon show called Out of Control and then disappeared from public view all together. Today, his whereabouts are a complete mystery and fans of his slim (no pun intended) body of work don't even know if he is alive or dead.
  • This episode also introduced the running gag of Liam watching porn movies with funny titles, usually on the fictional television station Jigglevision. With this episode, he watches "Bright Lights, Big Titties" with Kari Wuher and the very first hint that Liam knows Wuher is dropped.
  • The character of The Amazing Rando is a nod to Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie in which Mike and the Bots keep talking about The Amazing Rando during the end credits of the movie.
  • Part of the spell uttered by The Amazing Rando is the names of some of the Jackson 5 and their sisters.
  • Jar Jar Binks was supposed to have been a recurring character, speaking to Liam through the force as Obi-Wan did for Luke Skywalker. Jar Jar would make one more appearance before drifting off into obscurity, too annoying for even an internet serial.
